Types of Air Distribution Systems Explained...

Forced-Air Systems

A forced-air central system distributes the air after it has been heated or cooled using either the furnace or an air handler through an electrical fan or blower

This forces the air through a system of
ducts to each of the rooms in your house. As the conditioned air from the blower flows into the rooms it mixes with the air in the room. The air is then recirculated by drawing air through another set of ducts usually called the cold air return.

This system is adjustable: You can increase or decrease the amount of air flowing through your home by changing the motor speed of the blower, typically blower motors in a furnace or air handler have up to three or four fan speeds.

Gravity Systems

Gravity systems are "old school" and are based on the principle that hot air rises and cold air sinks and are typically not utilized anymore.

Because gravity systems cannot be used to distribute cool air from an air conditioner most systems these days have been replaced with forced air systems.

An example of a gravity system that is use today would be a wall or floor furnace where the furnace or heat exchanger is located near or below the floor and the the heated air rises which draws in the colder air at the floor. Older systems from days gone even had ducts connected as seen below.

Air Conditioning Central Air Cooling Systems Trouble Shooting Tips

Air Conditioning System FiltersWhat should I Look for Before I call for services on my air conditioning system?  The number one issue we find on air conditioning systems is clogged filters. First look to see if your air filter is clean and not clogged up, if it is clogged change the air filter and try your system again but keep in mind with the air conditioning system running with a clogged air filter you could have also iced up your indoor coil due to low air flow.

Heating Hot Water Boilers Tips for Troubleshooting

Checking your Control Thermostat  Is the thermostat's system selector switch in the "heat" position if applicable? Is the thermostat's temperature set point at least three degrees higher than the temperature inside? Is your thermostat electronic? Some electronic  thermostats operate from batteries and if they are okay the LCD display should be visible.

Gas Furnaces Troubleshooting Tips

Gas Furnance Hot Surface IgnitorIf your Gas Furnace is an older gas furnace (usually 10 plus years old) it may have a standing pilot light like a water heater, if this is the case carefully follow the instructions on the furnace to light the pilot. Some models have an intermittent pilot light or spark ignition and you can usually hear the the system try to light the pilot flame with a spark (makes several clicking sounds). Most newer Gas Furnaces these days have a hot surface ignitor which will glow red hot...

Heat Pump Troubleshooting Tips

Heat Pump Condensing UnitIf you have a heat pump and you can hear the outdoor unit running but cold air is blowing in your home you should wait a few minutes to see if the system starts heating again. Heat pumps will typically build up ice on the outdoor unit and in order for the system to continue working properly this ice must be removed. The heat pump will go through a defrost cycle to melt the ice that usually will last just a few minutes.

Thermostat Troubleshooting Tips - Operation of the Call for Heat

Simple Digital ThermostatThe first thing that must happen is that the control thermostat must provide a voltage signal to the furnace heating unit. The thermostat can be most understood as simply a switch that turns a low voltage 24 volt power on and off to the respective terminals. In the case of the thermostat calling for heat the thermostat switches on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RH” terminal which is the 24 volt power source...

Thermostat Troubleshooting Tips - Operation of the Call for Cooling

Thermostat Terminal BoardIn the case of the thermostat calling for cooling the thermostat switches on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RC” terminal which is the 24 volt power source to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat which is in essence the call for cooling. These terminals are located on the back or on the wall mounted face plate of the thermostat. All the wires connected to the thermostat will usually always go directly to the furnace and another set of wires will then go out to the outdoor air...

Electric Furnace Troubleshooting Tips

Electric Furnace Heating ElementsHousehold Electric Heat is generally produced using 220 Volt power, much like any electric stove the heating elements heat up when the electrical power is applied on both legs of the 220 Volt double pole circuit. Basic electrical requires that the electrical circuit be closed, in other words the circuit must be continuous with no breaks such as a switch, thermostat, broken wire and/or control or safety limit device. This is all that is generally required...

Oil Furnaces Troubleshooting Tips

Oil FurnacesFirst things first with all Oil Furnaces, have you checked to be sure you have fuel in the fuel oil storage tank. You need to make sure as this is a more common mistake. Once you are sure you have fuel in the tank make sure the fuel line is not leaking anywhere, look for stains where the fuel has bee leaking, you should smell it as a strong odor if the leak is fresh. Leaks in the fuel line can cause air to get into the system and the fuel pump...

Dual Fuel Systems Troubleshooting Tips

Dual Fuel HVAC SystemsMost Dual Fuel heat pump systems operate with the heat pump condensing unit only when outdoor temperatures are moderately cold. Like most heat pump systems the systems have back up or an emergency heat stage. For dual fuel systems the back up heat is the Natural or Propane Gas Furnace, this back up heat will usually come on when it gets too cold outside or when it is too cold in your home, in many cases you can manually turn on the emergency

Heat Pump Thermostat Troubleshooting

Heat Pump ThermostatThe first thing that must happen is that the heat pump control thermostat must provide a voltage signal to the indoor air handler or electric unit. The thermostat can be most understood as simply a switch that turns a low voltage 24 volt power on and off to the respective terminals. In the case of the heat pump thermostat calling for heating or cooling the thermostat switches on the power from the “R” terminal...

Duct Work Troubleshooting Tips

Sheet Metal Duct WorkThe following are some simple troubleshooting measure any homeowner can read to help determine if they have any issues that may need further attention. First off you will need to replace your air filters and make sure all supply registers are open throughout the home. This will ensure that your are operating at maximum air flow rates for your system design. Turn on the blower, normally this can be accomplished by switching the fan...

Gas Furnaces - Repair it Or Replace it

Gas Furnace ReplacementIf your furnace starts breaking down, or if you think your gas bill is too high, it may be time to consider a replacement furnace. If your furnace has a cracked heat exchanger, you must replace the furnace for safety reasons. A cracked heat exchanger can draw carbon monoxide into your home, so it is cause for an emergency furnace...

Air Conditioner - Repair it Or Replace it

Air Conditioning RepairsAir Conditioning Systems under 5 years of age: In most cases the best advice is to simply fix the unit. Nearly all manufacturers provide a 5 to 10-year warranty on the compressor and other parts. Some also provide a 5 or 10-year warranty on the air conditioning condenser and evaporator coils.

Checking for Leaking Duct Work

Leaking Duct Work Leaking duct work often accounts for 10 to 30 percent of total heating and cooling costs.
If duct leakage is 20% of total airflow, the efficiency of the cooling system can drop as much as 50%. Duct leakage also lowers heating and cooling capacity thereby reducing equipment life. And while the increase in energy costs as a result of leaky
