Boilers and Radiant Heating Systems Explained...

Hydronic or Hot Water Heating Systems utilize a heating hot water boiler and sometimes a steam boiler to provide the heat source.

This heat is distributed usually in pipes using the hot water or stream as the medium, the type of heat generated from these systems is called radiant heating and radiant heating is the most common type of hot water heating in a home and of these there are two basic types.

The first most common type for older buildings is the use of radiators both free standing and baseboard styles usually at the walls. The other most common type is placed in or under the floor using tubing or pipes to circulate the hot water or in this case steam is also very common for these types of systems.


There are others types of radiant heating many people are familiar with in homes include electric ceiling radiant heating or electric baseboard heaters which are not very efficient. There are also steam radiant heating systems and infrared heaters which are common usually for commercial or industrial applications.



The most important thing about radiant heating does not heat the air directly like a furnace, the heat energy is transferred through the space in all directions and is converted to heat when it contacts an object such as walls, furniture or even people.The heat will always move from a hot object to a cold object and it cannot flow back the other way. The heated objects themselves heat the air around them.

The heat source is from the boiler, hot water boilers are generally just like a hot water heater except that they have more heat generating capability or higher rated, are more efficient and have more controls and safety devices than your typical hot water heater may have. There are many types and styles of boilers, both steam and hot water and they come in various sizes and efficiencies.


The only difference between a steam and a hot water boiler is maybe a few safety devices or a couple different controls but mainly it is the temperature that the systems operate the distinguishes them apart, the heat hot water boiler typically will get not hotter than about 180 Deg F while the steam boiler is controlled by pressure of the steam itself so the temperature of the water is typically around 212 Deg F or the point that water boils.


One advantage the hot water system has over the steam is that the water temperature can be reduced for less heating loads but most boilers cannot go much below about 130 Deg F before problems begin to occur.
