VARIABLE SPEED BLOWER SYSTEMS

The term "variable speed" is in reference to the air handler or furnace fan motor or blower motorand while they are variable speed motors they are not variable speed in the true sense. Residential models are designed to use the variable speed to run at several pre-set speeds somewhat just like any other air handler or furnace. The difference is both in the motor and in how it gets up to that speed and how it slows back down or stops.

Variable Speed MotorsBlowers
First lets discuss the motor, the motors come in two basic varieties, PSC and ECM...

The ECM or Electronically Commutated Motor uses much less energy than it's counterpart but it does cost more

The PSC motor is a permanent split capacitor type motor, this motor is much the same as any motor in heating and air-conditioning systems and costs much less than it's big brother the ECM motor

So what are the advantages?

Cost Comparison Varable Speed Blowers Heating Cooling Repairs Furnace Heat Pump Air ConditioningMore Efficiency, much more...

Compared to a standard single speed air handler or furnace a variable speed air handler or furnace performs much better and uses 60% less electricity.

With
Air Conditioning Systems variable speed technology usually results in an efficiency gain of 1 SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio - the higher the SEER the lower your consumption).

Less Sound...

A variable speed air handler or furnace also runs much quieter because the blower slowly ramps up to the pre-set speed so there's no sudden blast of air when it starts up.

Better Indoor Air Quality and Even Better Comfort

Cleaner Air and better comfort because the furnace usually can be set up so that the fan is in constant operation and runs at a low speed all the time.

Even when no heating or cooling is needed it can be set up to continue to circulate the air throughout your home which allows air filters to capture more junk and it can maintain a more even temperature throughout the home making you m ore comfortable.

Variable Speed Technology is not new it is just fairly new to the residential market. These systems are highly efficient and "Green" and they are all well worth the investment no mater what type you purchase.

Green Technologies in our Homes... Radiant Barriers
One of the latest green concepts is very controversial and many people have different opinions about the advantages and disadvantages. While the energy savings it can provide are very good the down side is that it could lead to problems.

Green Technologies in our Homes - The "Green" Living Wall The idea of a living wall or green facade is as old as architecture itself, prominent in Europe and many other countries around the world. Everyone has seen buildings and homes covered in ivy and while this is literally a living wall, it is apparent that the motivation to allow the ivy to grow was not energy

The Geo-Thermal System Explained in a Nut Shell
Geothermal is by far the highest efficiency heating and cooling system available today. While the systems require up to three times more investment upfront than a conventional heating and cooling system...

Air Conditioning Systems Central Air Troubleshooting Tips
Air Conditioning System FiltersWhat should I Look for Before I call for services on my air conditioning system?  The number one issue we find on air conditioning systems is clogged filters. First look to see if your air filter is clean and not clogged up, if it is clogged change the air filter and try your system again but keep in mind with the air conditioning system running with a clogged air filter you could have also iced up your indoor coil due to low air flow.

Air Conditioning Systems Frequently Asked Questions
Air ConditioningWhy does my Air Conditioning run all day in hot weather? Assuming this is not a new symptom... this is a common complaint and can be attributed to two possible things. The first is that your system may have been designed correctly to meet the latest energy codes to perform at the highest efficiency. The other possibility is that it was not designed at all or was not sized properly in the first place.

Air Conditioning Systems Preventative Maintenance Tips
Air Conditioning CondenserThings you can do to maintain your air conditioning system. You can keep the outdoor air conditioner clean. You can vacuum out the inside of the unit and get all those leaves and stuff out. On most units you can gain access through the service panel. Be sure the power is off before opening the panel. Be careful not to knock off any wires and do not hit the coil as you will cause permanent damage.

Thermostat Troubleshooting Tips - Operation of the Call for Cooling
Thermostat Terminal BoardIn the case of the thermostat calling for cooling the thermostat switches on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RC” terminal which is the 24 volt power source to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat which is in essence the call for cooling. These terminals are located on the back or on the wall mounted face plate of the thermostat. All the wires connected to the thermostat will usually always go directly to the furnace and another set of wires will then go out to the outdoor air...
