Residential Zoned Zoning Control Systems
Zoning your heating and air conditioning system can both save you energy and make your home much more comfortable.
The most common type of zoned systems uses multiple heating and air conditioning units each serving a different area or floor like upstairs and downstairs.

When referring to zoning most of the time this means that dampers are installed to open and close the heated or cooled air serving specific areas of a home.
A two zone system will have two supply air dampers and a three zone system will have three supply air dampers... each one controlling the airflow to a separate zone through a zone control system.
It is important to point out that most contractors do not understand this technology very well and install these systems incorrectly.
The problem stems from the fact that in order for your heating and air conditioning system to operate properly and at it's peak efficiency it must have the correct amount of air flow at all times.
Well the act of closing a zone damper will in effect shut off a whole bunch or air flow. This can lead to equipment failure and ends up costing money because the system cannot operate a peak efficiency.
The correct way to install any zoned system is to also install what is called a bypass duct and damper, this simply opens when any zone is closed and allows the excess air to bypass the furnace or air handler supply ducts and return back to the blower.
This will prevent the system from running without the required air flow and will maintain the peak efficiency as well as increase the life of the equipment.
