Residential Zoned Zoning Control Systems

Zoning your heating and air conditioning system can both save you energy and make your home much more comfortable.

The most common type of zoned systems uses multiple heating and air conditioning units each serving a different area or floor like upstairs and downstairs.

Zoned Zoning System Control Diagram

When referring to zoning most of the time this means that dampers are installed to open and close the heated or cooled air serving specific areas of a home.

A two zone system will have two supply air dampers and a three zone system will have three supply air dampers... each one controlling the airflow to a separate zone through a zone control system.

It is important to point out that most contractors do not understand this technology very well and install these systems incorrectly.

The problem stems from the fact that in order for your heating and air conditioning system to operate properly and at it's peak efficiency it must have the correct amount of air flow at all times.

Well the act of closing a zone damper will in effect shut off a whole bunch or air flow. This can lead to equipment failure and ends up costing money because the system cannot operate a peak efficiency.

The correct way to install any zoned system is to also install what is called a bypass duct and damper, this simply opens when any zone is closed and allows the excess air to bypass the furnace or air handler supply ducts and return back to the blower.

This will prevent the system from running without the required air flow and will maintain the peak efficiency as well as increase the life of the equipment.

Air Conditioning Systems Central Air Troubleshooting Tips
Air Conditioning System FiltersWhat should I Look for Before I call for services on my air conditioning system?  The number one issue we find on air conditioning systems is clogged filters. First look to see if your air filter is clean and not clogged up, if it is clogged change the air filter and try your system again but keep in mind with the air conditioning system running with a clogged air filter you could have also iced up your indoor coil due to low air flow.

Air Conditioning Systems Frequently Asked Questions
Air ConditioningWhy does my Air Conditioning run all day in hot weather? Assuming this is not a new symptom... this is a common complaint and can be attributed to two possible things. The first is that your system may have been designed correctly to meet the latest energy codes to perform at the highest efficiency. The other possibility is that it was not designed at all or was not sized properly in the first place.

Air Conditioning Systems Preventative Maintenance Tips
Air Conditioning CondenserThings you can do to maintain your air conditioning system. You can keep the outdoor air conditioner clean. You can vacuum out the inside of the unit and get all those leaves and stuff out. On most units you can gain access through the service panel. Be sure the power is off before opening the panel. Be careful not to knock off any wires and do not hit the coil as you will cause permanent damage.

Thermostat Troubleshooting Tips - Operation of the Call for Cooling
Thermostat Terminal BoardIn the case of the thermostat calling for cooling the thermostat switches on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RC” terminal which is the 24 volt power source to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat which is in essence the call for cooling. These terminals are located on the back or on the wall mounted face plate of the thermostat. All the wires connected to the thermostat will usually always go directly to the furnace and another set of wires will then go out to the outdoor air...

ASI's Best Selling Zoning System - use for only one or two rooms or several

Activent Logo

Activent Zoned RegistersThe Activent is a new, smart product that is designed to help you manage the climate of individual rooms in your home or office with ease.

The innovative Activent helps eliminate problem areas of over heating or over cooling creating a more comfortable environment. In addition to comfort, the Activent redistributes hot or cold air to other rooms allowing the home to reach its set temperature in a more efficient manner, therefore helping reduce utility bills by up to 5% per Activent equipped room.

Simply put, managing the climate on a room-by-room basis makes the Activent one of this years best buys that will save you money!

Innovation

95% of homes with central heating and/or air conditioning share a common problem. Some rooms get too hot when the heat comes on or too cold when the air conditioning comes on. An average home in North America has 9-12 rooms with typically 2-4 rooms being over heated or over cooled.

Comfort

Installing an Activent in each of these rooms helps eliminate this problem. The homeowner simply replaces an existing air register with an Activent unit complete with its own electronic louver system. This louver system is controlled by a temperature controller (RTC) that is mounted on the wall or simply placed in the room. The homeowner sets the desired temperature for the room and the RTC will open or close the louver system in the Activent unit to maintain the desired temperature.

Energy Savings

In addition to maintaining the desired temperature in Activent controlled rooms, the Activent redistributes the hot or cold air to other rooms. This allows the rest of the home to reach its set temperature in a more efficient manner, therefore helping reduce utility bills by up to 5% per Activent equipped room (I.E. two rooms up to 10%, etc.).

Number of Vents Per Home

We recommend installing an Activent unit only in rooms that are too warm during the heating cycle and/or too cold in the cooling cycle. However, we do not recommend installing Activent systems in more than 1/3 of the air registers.
