Heating Furnace Failures - the number one cause

Your furnace is really not anything like your other appliances in your home. Most people treat their heating and cooling systems as if they are an appliance and that is an unfortunate and expensive mistake. All heating and cooling systems, both residential and commercial, are large consumers of electricity, natural gas and in some cases fuel oil or propane. They also generate a considerable amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

The biggest mistake people make is not changing their filters. Every heating and cooling system has filters and it is no surprise that many people do not know this. The filters are a vital component on any system as it protects the efficiency and the life expectancy of the system. In order to understand why the filters are so important you must first understand how a filter works.

Changing Air Filters
The air filters come in a few basic types, disposable poly fiber, disposable pleated paper, washable metal mesh or fibrous filters and electronic filters. All of the these filter types must be changed or cleaned regularly. The disposable and washable filters will collect dirt and other debris every time your fan runs, these filters become more efficient at collecting Changing Air Filterssmaller particles as they become dirty because the small holes in the filter media become clogged and they trap more and more stuff. But, these filters will reach a point where the media will be so clogged that it can no longer stand up to the punishment and they begin to tear or separate. At this point the filter starts letting this dirt and debris go past the filter in larger and larger sizes and amounts. A good way to know when this is starting to happen is by looking at the back side of your filter, you will see the dirt emerging on the other side in blots and spots, at that point the filter is releasing dirt and it is time to change it or clean it.

Generally filters need changing every two to four months. How often depends on how dirty the air is and how often the system runs.

The result of not changing your filter regularly is that the dirt released from your filter will start to coat everything inside your system and will build up over time. This system will become less and less efficient as this happens and the working components of the system will have to work harder to perform. There is a distinct domino effect when this happens and the system will begin to fail for several reasons.

Dirty Blower and Blower Motor
The blower wheel itself as well as the motor becomes coated and if you have air conditioning the indoor cooling coil will also be coated and become clogged just like the filter, this results in much less air flow into the space. This reduced flow causes higher temperatures and the system starts to shut off on it's high temperature safety switch causing the system to run even more cycles than normal. The higher temperatures lead to heat exchanger failure by over stressing the metal of the heat exchanger. The electric motor driving the blower wheel becomes coated inside, causing the motor to overheat and it will eventually fail also.

So if I was to give one bit of advice it would be to change those filters regularly, not only will you save money in operating costs but you will substantially increase the life of your system. Even if you rent you are wasting your hard earned dollars by not changing those filters.

If your system is already dirty or you have no idea if you have filters I strongly suggest that you have a professional come and clean your system and inspect the operation. It will save you hundreds of dollars in return over just one season of operation.
