Gas Furnace Flue is for the Birds

Well this one is much more common than most people would believe but it is true and it does happen with regularity. Normally the bird is long dead before the service technician gets to your home but in this case the bird was heard and safely released to find a better place to roost.

Yes Folks This Bird is Very Much Alive and Well and flew away moments later

The issue usually starts with an old or broken flue cap assembly, normally it is very difficult for a bird to get into the gas furnace flue but it happens all the time and most often it is not noticed until late in the fall when it is time to start up the heat. At that point yes, you usually have a petrified bird in your flue. The birds will always fall all the way into the inducer motor and can be removed by removing the flue pipe at the furnace inducer motor.

This same thing has also been known to happen on 90+% furnaces as the birds get into the PVC flue and cannot get back out. Sometimes people will place screens to stop the birds but this is not a good idea because in the winter the 90+% furnaces will produce condensate or moisture in the flue gases and this will freeze to the screen leading to more issues and wonderment as to why the heat does not work. Screens can be used on that 80% furnace but usually the flue cap just needs to be updated or replaced and it is just as easy as trying to figure out how to get that screen to stay put in the right place.

Gas furnace repairs are not always as technical as one might think, sometimes the repairs just required common sense and thinking outside the box.... or flue in this case.
