Green HVAC Technologies of the future

There are many changes taking place in heating and air conditioning technologies that many people are not aware of. Advances and cost reductions in green technologies have slowly been entering into both the commercial and residential markets and today the choices are staggering.

As with many other technologies the costs for the latest and greatest gadget reduces as technologies catch up and as a result of competition in the marketplace.

Some of these technologies today include variable speed air handlers and furnaces and while the term variable speed is used loosely in this author's opinion, the cost savings are real and the added comfort from less noise and drafts is also very real. While two stage gas and modulating gas valves have been around for awhile the concept has advantages for comfort and not so much for energy savings because it still takes the same amount of heat to heat a space no matter what you do to the heat source itself.

Variable Speed TechnologyHowever when you combine that variable speed furnace with the modulating gas valve suddenly there is an advantage for energy savings from the electric motor, the reduce fire rates of the modulating gas valve allow for the furnace to run at lower speeds when the space is under reduced demand for heat.

Do not be confused, the variable speed furnaces today will slowly speed up to several preset speeds and will normally run at those preset speeds for the duration of the heating or cooling cycle and slowly ramp back down and turn off.

This is actually necessary for the system to operate properly and is nearly unavoidable in the heating cycle and more so for the air conditioning cycle with today's technology.   Well, at least for now.

Variable Speed CostThe technology exists today that allows for full modulation of all the components, heating, air conditioning and fan speeds all linked together to run a variable rates. These technologies are somewhat new and are gaining ground in the commercial world. Variable speed water chillers have surged into nearly all new facilities except the smallest, but that is now also taking the next step in gaining the full variable rates available from the equipment with the development of what is known as primary variable flow where the water pump is fully variable directly with the water chiller. Normally the chiller required a set specific flow of water at all times just like the residential systems require the same set air flow or fan speeds for their operation to work correctly.

The next generation of residential heating and air conditioning systems will follow this trend, while it could take a decade or more to become cost effective the concept where the entire heating and cooling system on a home is fully variable will be common place one day, whether it be a gas furnace with air conditioning or a heat pump and even a geo-thermal heat pump with their fans and blowers all running at variable rates together for the maximum energy savings from the equipment while operating fully optimized for the actual demand or load at any given time.
