Nano-Materials cooked in microwaves could be the future for all our cooling and heating says the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
The concept that is leading to this incredible breakthrough is the idea of actually contaminating nano-structured thermoelectric materials with very small amounts of sulfur and cooking them in a microwave. The researchers are reported to have used a simple kitchen microwave oven to cook their samples.
Okay so first off a nano is really really small... from Wikipedia.org a Nano is a prefix meaning a billionth. Used primarily in the metric system, this prefix denotes a factor of 10 to the 9th or 0.000000001. In other words, highly microscopic stuff.
Thermoelectric as explained at Wikipedia.org is that the thermoelectric effect refers to phenomena by which either a temperature difference creates an electric potential or an electric potential creates a temperature difference. So in this case it would be the later where the change in electrical potential results in different temperatures.
The resulting cooked or more accurately "doped" nano-materials are then formed from a powder into pea sized pellets and it is these pea sized pellets that have formed a new class of thermoelectric materials that are proving to have superior properties to thermoelectric materials of the past.
In the past thermoelectric materials were developed and are used today in small refrigerators but they are notoriously inefficient. This newly found technology could quickly lead the way towards getting away from burning fossil fuels and using chemical refrigerants, refrigerants that are well know to destroy our environment and potentially our health as well and the importance of reducing our carbon dioxide output from fossil fuels seems to be quickly becoming more urgent than ever.
This is truly an important step in heating and cooling technology, it can lead to highly efficient heating and cooling of our homes, foods and other goods with virtually no moving parts, no chemicals introduced to the environment and no burning of fossil fuels. That is a really Green technology to look forward to seeing become mainstream.

  What
should I Look for Before I call for services on my air conditioning
system? The number one issue we find on air conditioning systems is
clogged filters. First look to see if your air filter is clean and not
clogged up, if it is clogged change the air filter and try your system
again but keep in mind with the air conditioning system running with a
clogged air filter you could have also iced up your indoor coil due to
low air flow.

  Why
does my Air Conditioning run all day in hot weather? Assuming this is
not a new symptom... this is a common complaint and can be attributed to
two possible things. The first is that your system may have been
designed correctly to meet the latest energy codes to perform at the
highest efficiency. The other possibility is that it was not designed at
all or was not sized properly in the first place. |
  Things you can do to maintain your air conditioning system. You can keep the outdoor air conditioner clean. You can
vacuum out the inside of the unit and get all those leaves and stuff
out. On most units you can gain access through the service panel. Be
sure the power is off before opening the panel. Be careful not to knock
off any wires and do not hit the coil as you will cause permanent
damage.

  In
the case of the thermostat calling for cooling the thermostat switches
on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RC” terminal which is
the 24 volt power source to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat which is
in essence the call for cooling. These terminals are located on the back
or on the wall mounted face plate of the thermostat. All the wires
connected to the thermostat will usually always go directly to the
furnace and another set of wires will then go out to the outdoor air... |
