Common Issue with Gas Furnaces can cost hundreds in repairs

All modern gas furnaces have electronic control boards, these are essentially simple computers with relays that controls the sequencing and monitor the operation for safety issues. These circuit boards can cost hundreds of dollars just for the board and they fail much more often than people think.

Like all electronics there is one critical component that protects the board from voltage surges and static electricity which can and very often causes the board to fail if this component is faulty or missing. This critical component is much more simple and basic than you would expect, it is the grounding or ground wires.

Ground wires are found both at the high voltage electrical  supply to the furnace and inside the furnace itself and all forms of grounds are very important to safe guard the system. Many furnaces are installed and never properly grounded at the high voltage source to begin with.

Other issues arise after several years if operation when a ground is attached to a hot surface which is much more common than you may think. In these cases the heat breaks down the contact or solder-less terminal causing the ground to fail. These can usually be found on the inducer fan motor where the ground is connected to a mounting bolt for the inducer fan and this mounting bolt gets very hot while in operation.

For the "Do It Yourselfer" and HVAC technicians alike it is a good idea to inspect these grounds and make sure that they are in fact intact, have a good ground surface and are tight.
