The costs of repairing your older air conditioning system are suddenly skyrocketing out of control.
Several years ago the EPA issued a mandate that the commonly used refrigerant R22 would be phased out over several years for environmental concerns about ozone depletion. Newer air conditioners are sold with the recognized replacement and is know as R410a, most of those sold over the past several years and are not effected by this mandate unless the unit uses R22. In recent weeks the wholesale prices for the phased out R22 refrigerant have literally skyrocketed and double in cost practically overnight. From this point forward the prices of R22 refrigerant will be very volatile as the manufacturers scramble to meet the mandated reductions and as the raw materials become much less available. All HVAC contractors everywhere will be forced to pass these costs on to the consumer and the prices from some contractors could be truly shocking. This will effect millions upon millions of air conditioning equipment and systems.
Supplies will also begin to dwindle in the coming months and for the foreseeable future the entire supply chain will be unreliable both in maintaining adequate stocks on hand but also in that the highly volatile pricing will continue to have a significant upward trend. From just before the official start of the 2008 recession up to today's prices the wholesale prices for R22 refrigerant has increased over 500% and that is just the beginning of what to expect over the next several years.
The Good News is that there are lower cost alternatives to R22, these are called drop in replacement refrigerants, and while these refrigerants perform a little differently in many cases they will work perfectly and your air conditioning unit will operate normally for the most part. Homeowners need to check to see if they have any warranty remaining on their older air conditioning system as many manufacturers will void their warranty if any of the drop in replacement refrigerants are used in their system.
How do you check to see if your system is running with R22, simply check the name plate on the outdoor condensing unit and it will indicate what refrigerant is inside the system. If the unit is 7 years or older chances are very good it is in fact an R22 system.

  What
should I Look for Before I call for services on my air conditioning
system? The number one issue we find on air conditioning systems is
clogged filters. First look to see if your air filter is clean and not
clogged up, if it is clogged change the air filter and try your system
again but keep in mind with the air conditioning system running with a
clogged air filter you could have also iced up your indoor coil due to
low air flow.

  Why
does my Air Conditioning run all day in hot weather? Assuming this is
not a new symptom... this is a common complaint and can be attributed to
two possible things. The first is that your system may have been
designed correctly to meet the latest energy codes to perform at the
highest efficiency. The other possibility is that it was not designed at
all or was not sized properly in the first place. |
  Things you can do to maintain your air conditioning system. You can keep the outdoor air conditioner clean. You can
vacuum out the inside of the unit and get all those leaves and stuff
out. On most units you can gain access through the service panel. Be
sure the power is off before opening the panel. Be careful not to knock
off any wires and do not hit the coil as you will cause permanent
damage.

  In
the case of the thermostat calling for cooling the thermostat switches
on the power from the “R” or in some cases the “RC” terminal which is
the 24 volt power source to the “Y” terminal on the thermostat which is
in essence the call for cooling. These terminals are located on the back
or on the wall mounted face plate of the thermostat. All the wires
connected to the thermostat will usually always go directly to the
furnace and another set of wires will then go out to the outdoor air... |
